Making Your Home Work For You
by Deann Curtis

As our family is growing again, with the eighth baby on his way, we have decided that a two bedroom house is just not big enough anymore.  So how did we get enough money to rent, or for that matter buy a larger house?

*  *  *

Well, we didn't. No, we aren't moving into a relative's old house and we aren't moving into the house down the street that is vacant more often than it is occupied.  In fact, we aren't moving at all.

What we are doing is getting creative again.  We are turning a small storage type room in our house into another bedroom.  It is big enough for a bed, a desk and chair, a bookcase and a little privacy.  Our almost teenage daughter will appreciate being able to get away from everyone else once in a while and it will give her the benefit of some quiet time that she truly needs to be able to work on her schoolwork.  With seven younger brothers and sisters, she is really going to need her space.

We have been able to do this without really hurting our budget.  We got the bed at a local thrift store as well as the desk and chair.  The bookcase came from another part of the house where it wasn't needed anymore.  Everything else has been or will be picked up one thing at a time, when she has had allowance or birthday money to spend.  This includes: curtains, bedding, a small waste can, paint, a lamp, a clock, small area rugs, a bean bag chair, a dresser and some small stacking drawers for school and art supplies.  Other things, we will be making for her room together.  This includes: a bulletin board, an art display area and a place to hang coats and backpacks.

By planning this project with our daughter, we are insuring that we come away from this with a room that she will really enjoy.  She has been able to help pick out the colors and help to decide how everything will fit in her "new" room.

Now, maybe you aren't expecting your eighth baby, and maybe you have plenty of bedrooms in your home.  But, you could use this information to help redecorate a room together.  Or maybe, what you are searching for is something else.  Maybe you are trying to find a place in your home where you can have a home office, an art studio, a quiet study area or even a playroom for the grandchildren.  Whatever your need is, just sit down and think for a while.

First decide what the need is.  Then, come up with a way to do it.  Is there a room in your home that isn't really serving a purpose anymore?  Or could a room actually do double duty.  You could add an office area to a room just by adding a desk, chair and computer.  Or a spare room could double as a play area if you simply store the toys up and out of the way until they are needed.

The same principle applies for an art area.  Just find a few drawers in the kitchen or add some to a closet and now you have a place to keep the art supplies.  Put your easel and drop cloth in the closet too and now you have everything ready when the mood strikes you to create.

You don't have to be satisfied with going without just because your house seems limiting.  All it takes is a little planning and a little creativity to make your home work for you and your family.  You will be so glad that you took the time to truly make it your home.
