"Country Christmas Cross Stitch Ornament"

Submitted by Lisa Speed of GA

I love to cross stitch, and this Christmas season my husband and I decided that we would make most of our Christmas gifts.  I have seen patterns similar to this one, but did not use one to make this one.  It is very simple and I just played with it until I got it right.  We gave these to my brother & sister in laws (3 couples) and also to my aunt's & uncles (5 couples) along with a bag of goodies.  They were very well received.

How to:

I used a small hoop to keep the material tight while stitching.  Personally, I started with the middle and worked to the bottom and then went back to the top and finished all the cross stitches.  ( I did sketch this pattern out vaguely to have an idea as to what I was looking for.)  The limbs are single back stitches and I sporadically placed those.  When the tree was done I added different colored buttons for more detail.  I then measured 2 inches out from the top, sides, and bottom and marked it on the back of my cross stitch material and cut it out.  Then laid the material on top of the Christmas material and cut it out to be the same size.  I cut a piece of jute or twine about 4 inches and pinned it to the material.  Then I pinned everything wrong side out together and stitched around the outside (leave a hole at the top to stuff the ornaments).  Once stitched, I turned the ornament right side out and stuffed with cotton and hand stitched the ornament closed.

Things needed to complete:

small cross stitch hoop
DMC thread in colors you would like to use
14 count cross stitch material (I used oatmeal colored)
small piece of Christmas fabric
buttons
jute or ribbon

All material can used can be found at your local craft store.
