"Old Fashioned" Collage Decorating

by Susan Helber

Save old seed catalogs, pretty wrapping papers, especially things that look "old fashioned."  More...

Items needed:

Paper scraps
Scissors
Things to put the decoration on (boxes, clay pots, lockers, etc.)
Craft glue
Water based polyurethane
Brush and water to clean it with

Instructions:

Glue bits and pieces of paper scraps in a collage fashion on to wooden boxes or clay pots, or old foot lockers - you will think of things to cover once you get started!  Use craft glue from the fabric or craft store.

After the glued down paper scraps are completely dry, paint water based polyurethane clear paint over the entire surface.  Let dry and paint again if desired. You will see a beautiful smooth, non bumpy collaged surface to your design.

You will probably start imagining all kinds of crafts to make for you and your children to SELL!  Try making bright items and also "subtle" items with, for instance, black and white newspaper letters or hand water colored black and white pictures.

A unique method which must be done using adult supervision is to burn the edges of say a flower picture by holding it to a candle and then gluing it down.  This black edge is very mysterious looking.  Also, tea dip a picture and let dry.  Glue this down and it will look antique.  All of this is experimental.   Thin wrapping papers work best.

And, don't forget to haul out the old dresser in the shed, hose it off, dry it, paint it with scrap paint and start to work putting roses and anything that strikes your fancy all over it!
